Such tumors are called Recurrent Giant invasive pituitary adenoma which has criteria of size more than 4cm, invasion of blood vessels, bone or dura mater with multicompartmental spread. This specific operation is known as Frontotemporalzygomatic craniotomy with extradural clinoidectomy with Dolenc transcavernous approach. Vinco Dolenc is an European neurosurgeon who described this operation first in the 90s for complex central skull base tumors. Since this operation is very complex, it is performed only at a few centers in our country. Dr Anil kothiwala who is trained at AIIMS New Delhi said that this brain operation doesn’t only consist of opening of the skull but it’s actually unlocking the brain from the central skull base and then removing the complex invasive tumor. Operation was conducted over a duration of 8 hours and the patient regained consciousness just after the operation. Dr kothiwala showed his concern specifically for misconceptions in society about brain and spine surgery. Even in 21st century, the number of patients is very high, those who suffer morbidity or mortality due to lack of surgery.
