| Video Discription | The first successful laparotomy (as documented in modern medicine) was performed in the year 1809. Imagine my surprise when I came across an ancient Buddhist text - the Mahavagga - said to have been compiled more than 2500 years ago, which describes a laparotomy being performed successfully for a condition which sounds similar to a volvulus. Interestingly, the first volvulus was described less than 200 years ago in medical literature. So, how is it that ancient Indians knew about it? And if they did know about it, how and why did the knowledge disappear? Ancient India was truly a great period - something that can only be dreamt of, something that can barely be imagined and sadly, something that has been lost over the ages. |
