| Video Discription | Exophthalmos, also called proptosis, is a bulging of the eye anteriorly out of the orbit (bulging eyes or big eyes). Exophthalmos can be either bilateral (as is often seen in Graves' disease or Thyroid Ophthalmopathy, also called thyroid eye disease) or unilateral. Proptosis is the anterior displacement (moving outwards towards the front) of the eye from the orbit. Since the orbit (bony socket enclosing and protecting the eye) is closed off posteriorly, medially, and laterally, any enlargement of structures located within will cause the anterior displacement of the eye - that is, because the eye cannot move into the head, side to side, or up or down, if anything around the eye gets bigger, the only direction it can bulge is towards the front. It is the most common benign neoplasm of the orbit (orbital mass / orbital tumor) in adults. Primary lymphoma of the orbit is one of commonest tumors of the orbit and accounts for as much as half of all orbital malignancies.
