Its growth is slow, near the pituitary gland of the brain, which secretes hormones that control many bodily functions. As the craniopharyngioma grows, it can affect the function of the pituitary gland and other nearby structures in the brain. This tumor can occur at any age, but it occurs more frequently in children and older adults. Symptoms include gradual changes in vision, fatigue, excessive urination, and headaches. Children with craniopharyngioma may grow slowly and be smaller than expected. Surgery is most often recommended to remove all or most of the tumor. The type of operation to be performed will depend on the location and size of the tumor. Open craniopharyngioma surgery (craniotomy) involves opening the skull and in most cases displacing the brain to gain access to the tumor. In minimally invasive craniopharyngioma surgery (ENDONASAL ENDOSCOPIC SURGERY), special surgical tools are inserted through the nose. The tools pass through a natural passageway (nostrils) into the tumor without affecting the brain. If possible, surgeons remove the entire tumor. However, because there are many delicate and important structures nearby, doctors sometimes do not remove the entire tumor to ensure a good quality of life after the operation. In those situations, other treatments may be used after surgery. We present the case of an elderly patient with a clinical presentation of visual disorders and persistent headache. |
